A curriculum that respects and celebrates diverse backgrounds can make a significant impact during these formative years.” Kalra’s observation reflects the foundational role of early education in shaping children’s attitudes towards the world. By embedding cultural narratives in lessons, children are encouraged to view diversity not as an exception but as a norm, laying the groundwork for a more inclusive mindset from the start.
This integration of diverse cultures is not limited to early childhood education but extends across all stages of learning. Schools like Delhi Public School (DPS) are at the forefront of these changes, embedding diversity into their educational practices. Devyani Jaipuria, Pro-Vice Chairperson of DPS International Gurugram, DPS 45 Gurugram, and DPS Jaipur, notes the evolving focus on inclusivity: “In Indian schools today, there is a growing commitment to embracing diversity and fostering inclusion.” This shift marks a significant departure from the traditional curriculum that primarily centred on a singular cultural narrative. By bringing in diverse voices, schools like DPS are helping students develop a broader, more nuanced understanding of the world.
Multilingual education and cultural perspectives
One of the most compelling examples of how schools are adapting to this new reality is their approach to language learning. With nearly 60% of students speaking a language at home that differs from the language of instruction, there has been a growing need for multilingual education. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has been instrumental in driving this shift, promoting a multilingual approach that respects the linguistic diversity of the student population.

However, creating truly inclusive classrooms involves more than just adding a few culturally themed lessons. Schools are increasingly focusing on integrating cultural perspectives into everyday interactions and experiences. This holistic approach aims to ensure that diversity becomes a seamless part of the school culture. Harish Sanduja, Director of Schools and IT at Seth Anandram Jaipuria Group of Educational Institutions, supports this idea: “Schools in India are progressively embracing diversity and inclusion as cornerstones of holistic education.” Sanduja’s perspective reflects the understanding that the value of inclusion lies not only in what is taught but also in how students engage with one another daily.
While the movement towards greater inclusivity is gaining momentum, there are still significant challenges. In some conservative regions, cultural integration faces resistance, as traditional norms and values may conflict with more progressive ideas of inclusion. Moreover, the pressure to perform in standardised tests often limits the time and space available for the kind of experiential learning that is crucial for true cultural integration. Despite these hurdles, many educators remain optimistic about the future of inclusive education in India.
Ratna Viswanathan, CEO of Reach To Teach, points out that while the NEP 2020 has been a game-changer in acknowledging India’s cultural complexity, more work is needed to ensure full inclusion: “In the Indian context, Diversity and Inclusion is largely understood as equal access to education for all but especially for Children With Special Needs (CWSN).” She stresses the need for better infrastructure, specialised teaching materials, and teacher training to meet the needs of all students effectively. Viswanathan’s insights highlight the essential role teachers play in making schools truly inclusive. Without adequate support and training, even the most well-intentioned policies can fail to deliver meaningful change.
Schools and institutions leading the way

This philosophy is mirrored in every aspect of the institution’s operations, from the curriculum to daily interactions, ensuring that inclusivity is not just a theoretical concept but a lived experience for every student.
Similarly, GD Goenka Group’s approach to diversity exemplifies how schools can foster a more empathetic and socially responsible student body. Amrita Bahl, Chief Education Officer at GD Goenka Group, asserts that “a diverse and inclusive environment enriches learning and fosters empathy, preparing our students to thrive in a globally connected world.” By catering to different learning styles and abilities, the school ensures that every student’s needs are met, making diversity a cornerstone of their educational mission.
At the higher education level, institutions like Jaipuria Institute of Management are also embracing diversity as a critical component of their educational ethos. Kavita Pathak, Director of Jaipuria Institute, notes, “We recognise the significance of embracing the rich diversity of our society within our classrooms.” Their efforts include not just celebrating cultural festivals but also incorporating global viewpoints into lesson plans, thus ensuring that students are equipped with the skills to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world.
Finally, Kunal Dalal, Managing Director of JBCN Education highlights the broader impact of fostering inclusivity in schools: “By embracing our unique differences, we create a dynamic learning ecosystem where every learner feels valued, empowered, and inspired to reach their full potential.” Dalal’s words encapsulate the essence of what schools across India are striving to achieve—a vibrant, inclusive educational environment where every student’s individuality is celebrated.
