Strengthening Learning: The Journey of Kuran Primary School

Situated along the coastline of Kutch District, Gujarat, lies Kuran Primary School, located in the last village of Gujarat, right on India’s border. Spread across the borderlands, the school faces multiple challenges, harsh weather, lack of connectivity, and a shortage of teachers, all making education a challenging task.

Existing conditions received a setback in 2001 due to the earthquake that destroyed existing infrastructure, forcing children out of schools. Consequently learning gaps widened and there was a need for children to catch up with their Grades.

Through the collective efforts of the local administration, Government agencies, and aid organisations, Kuran Primary School was the first to be rebuilt, and children once again commenced learning.

Even as the school reopened, challenges remained. Many students had fallen behind, and teachers struggled to bridge the learning gaps. This is where Reach to Teach brought in interventions via the Mission Schools of Excellence Project of the World Bank where we are the official Technical Support Unit (TSU). With Teacher Needs Assessments and focused teacher training, innovative techniques to help educators identify and address learning gaps, we strengthened frameworks to ensure quality of teaching and learning. “This will benefit both students and teachers in the long run,” says Gosai Ramghar Mahadevgar, Headmaster of the school who feels far more confident with the new strategies to support every child.

In collaboration with the Government, we have played a crucial role in Gunotsav (Accreditation Framework) and helped schools strengthen pedagogy, teacher capability and identified gaps within the school ecosystem which has led to strengthening the school. The Headmaster finds this process very useful and has implemented interventions with enthusiasm.

“We have achieved excellence in some areas, but there’s still work to do,” he reflects. While the school hasn’t actively participated in competitions, he now dreams of engaging every student, boosting their confidence and motivation.

His ultimate goal? To ensure that every child learns with joy and curiosity.
